Tasting Whiskee

Learning how to taste Whiskee the way distillers, blenders, and bartenders do is actually a lot of fun. Once you do, you’ll enjoy Whiskee more and your palate will broaden.

There are no wrong answers - each element is subjective and personal.   The object is to taste not just simply drink our Whiskee. Try comparing our Whiskee to other brands and let us know what you think!

Tasting our Whiskee and submitting the form above enters you into our monthly draw. The draw is a promotional activity for and on behalf of Rusty Mill Distillery.

The offer and the reward are open to all Australian citizens over the age of eighteen (18). Failure to provide necessary contact details will exclude eligibility as we would not be able to verify age and delivery details should you win.

Entrants need to be willing to receive promotional information, by email, limited to no more than one per month.

The reward is either a (single) 500 ml bottle of Whiskee or (single) 200 ml bottle liqueur depending on availability at our discretion. The bottles are only available to people who have sampled our products and lodge a review with full details comparing our product to a traditional Whisky or whiskey spirit.

Each draw starts at the beginning of the calendar month and closes at the end of the same month.

The draw will occur within the first week of the next month with the winner being contacted and advised by email. Shipping will occur after confirming age and shipping address. Entrants must be identifiable as having purchased our product (via our records showing you are a valued customer). We do not want our valued customers being displaced by online scams.

Winners will have their first name & suburb or town name announced on our BLOG page. The reward is not a prize and can’t be jackpotted.

The Swirl

It might amuse you to suggest holding up the glass and giving it a little swirl. This will key you into the Whiskee’s viscosity. Watch the Whiskee take hold of the side of the glass and slowly work its way back down. This is referred to as the whiskee’s legs.

The Nose

It’s important to take in the aromas of the Whiskee before your first sip. Getting the most out of this experience is a bit of a science. You don’t want to simply stick your nose into the glass and breathe in. While keeping your mouth open, hover your nose just over the opening of the glass and take a few small smells.

Try closing your eyes and see if you can pick out the aromas.

The Taste

You might want to fill your mouth with Whiskee, but the key is to start with a very small sip and let it move around on your tongue. Swallow the whisky to prep your palate for the more to come. During your next sip, hold the Whiskee on your tongue a little longer. You also might want to bring some air in from between your lips. Continue this and, as your palate gets used to our Whiskee, more flavours will appear.

The Finish

After a long sip or when you’re finished, you’ll likely notice that the last sip ends with a warming (or downright hot) sensation that leaves you feeling pretty good. Think about the warming level, but also try to think of what flavours and mouthfeel you find on the finish. Is it dry? Does it end with a fruity sweetness? Maybe a little smoke (possibly a lot of smoke or peat) in the case of single malt? What are the last few flavours you notice?
